WINSTED — Almost 55 years after the publication of “Unsafe At Any Speed,” consumer advocate, former presidential candidate, and Winsted resident Ralph Nader is still not a loss for words when it comes to national issues.
Nader was in town on Saturday, Jan. 4 at the Winsted Community Bookstore to sign copies of his latest book “Fake President: Decoding Trump’s Gaslighting, Corruption, and General Bullsh*t,” which was released in December and co-authored with Mark Green.
Green is the author of “Who Runs Congress” which was first published in 1972 and “Losing Our Democracy: How Bush, The Far Right And Big Business are Betraying Americans For Power And Profit” in 2006.
In an interview with Nader at the book signing, he said that the book is meant to be a guide to the Trump presidency and the ongoing impeachment proceedings in Congress.
“The book is meant to be read and used because Donald Trump and his Trumpsters are destroying the country on an installment plan,” Nader said.
When asked about President Trump, Nader did not hold back with his opinions.
“He’s a championship liar,” Nader said. “He’s made over 14,000 lies about things that are going on in this country. Their lies obscure what is going on. Manufacturing is on a decade low and yet [the Trump administration] promised more manufacturing. So they hollowed out even more jobs in Ohio and Wisconsin.”
Nader went on to say that the book “makes a case that Trump and his cronies have all hijacked the government.”
“He has stripped protections for children, degraded protection against air and water pollution and has given the tax system to the super-rich and corporations,” Nader said. “He created a trillion and-a-half deficit and passed it along to the children and grandchildren of the very voters who voted for him. He’s turned the government over to the greed hounds and taken even more away from the people.”
As for the ongoing impeachment proceedings against President Trump, Nader said that he believes that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has made several mistakes.
“The mistake Pelosi made is that she is very narrowly focused on what happened with Trump and Ukraine, and most people don’t even have a stake in the Ukraine issue,” Nader said. “But millions of people have a stake in how he is degrading the rights of labor, consumers, poisoning the environment and letting the corporate crave wave wash over millions of defenseless Americans.”
Nader went on to say that if people want to change the way things are in the country that the best way to do so is to vote in this November’s presidential election.
“If you don’t vote, how can you complain?” Nader said. “If you don’t vote you will be depressed. You should start thinking about voting and who you should vote for. That way you become alive civically.”
The book “Fake President: Decoding Trump’s Gaslighting, Corruption, and General Bullsh*t” is available at all bookstores and online retailers.
