COLEBROOK — Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, this week it was announced that Camp Jewell will not be open for summer programs this year.
The announcement was made on the camp’s website at by Executive Director Craig Dawson.
The cancellation of the summer overnight camp program was to be expected as Gov. Ned Lamont signed an executive order on Monday, May 19 canceling overnight summer camps across the state.
“The past several months have been unprecedented times, both for home, camp and around the world,” Dawson said in a video on the website. “We spent the last 12 weeks working out in the current situation how we can make camp happen. We looked at all of our procedures, activities, the way cabins would work, to ensure that camp would be still fun, but also safe at the same time. However, we have become aware that we won’t be able to run camp this summer.”
Dawson said that he is saddened about the cancellation of camp.
“It’s hard because the camp will be quiet this summer, but it’s okay to be angry and sad about that,” he said. “Will camp be happening next year? Absolutely! That’s the plan.”
In a press release on the website, Dawson added that “Operating a safe and enriching camp takes many months of preparation under normal circumstances. However, strict social distancing requirements, severe limitations on everything from what programs we could feasibly offer to how and where we would feed our campers and staff combined with shortages of tests and supplies made it incredibly difficult to develop a suitable program for our families.”
While the decision to close overnight camp is final, Dawson wrote that the camp is looking into the possibility of running non-overnight programs.
However, Dawson wrote that “At this point, Camp Jewell must remain closed to the public. We hope that over the summer we may be able to find times to safely allow guests to visit the property, and we will keep you updated!”
According to the camp’s website, Camp Jewell first opened in 1901 and is a branch of the YMCA of Greater Hartford.
