RIVERTON — After several months of work, husband and wife Adam and Danamarie Towers opened the Royal Coachman Tavern at the Old Riverton Inn on Friday, May 22.
The two purchased the Old Riverton Inn, located at 436 East River Road, last August.
The inn was originally built in 1811 and has been in continuous operation ever since.
“We started construction on the tavern beginning this year,” Adam Towers said in an interview with The Winsted Phoenix. “We have been diligently working on getting all of the construction done ever since.”
Due to Covid-19 related state regulations, the tavern currently offers to take out orders.
“We also have seven tables for outside seating,” Towers said. “We are not going to wait on tables. You can come up to the tent and make it an order to go, and we will call you when you are ready. You can bring it to your table for you to sit and eat. We are not waiting on the tables themselves because of the whole Covid-19 thing and we want to be extra cautious right now.”
Towers said that the tavern is offering unique meals to its customers, including ten different kinds of burgers, multiple specialty pizzas, along with fish and chips, fresh Maine lobster rolls, and pulled pork sandwiches.
“We wanted the meals to have a bit of uniqueness to it,” he said. “We’re offering things that you usually don’t find in this area in order for us to stand out and be a little different than anyone else. We want to give people from Winsted, Torrington, and New Hartford reasons to drive down to Riverton.”
Towers said that the ingredients used in the meals add to the uniqueness of what the tavern serves.
“We use homemade sourdough with our pizza,” he said. “All of the sauces we use are homemade, and it’s not purchased from a store. It’s the same with the lobster rolls we sell. The meats are shipped here overnight. They are not frozen, it’s all fresh. We are looking forward to earning everybody’s confidence, in not just our product but also our foods and services.”
