NEW HARTFORD — New Hartford Barber Company, a new barbershop on 526 Main Street, opened its doors on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and is already seeing a growth of customers in its first week.
Alanna Sartirana of Barkhamsted owns and operates the shop and has been a hairdresser for almost seven years with a specialization in barbering in particular for the past four years. Before opening the shop in New Hartford, Sartirana worked out of Main Street Barber in Thomaston.
“My first couple of days were very busy,” Sartirana said in an interview with The Winsted Phoenix. “I honestly was not expecting to be as busy as I was, but I do have quite a bit of a following myself, and I had quite a few people that were new as well which is nice.”
The shop’s location in downtown New Hartford has been helpful for many of Sartirana’s clients, who previously had to travel far into other parts of the state to find the hair services they desired.
“Honestly, I feel like our town needed a barbershop since there was always one in the center, and they closed I think three or four years ago now,” Sartirana said. “A lot of my clients when I was working in other places traveled from around here, so I felt that by opening a spot so centralized to where I live it would be a lot more convenient for the people that were already my clients.”
Barbering, a specialized form of haircutting focused on men’s hair and grooming, appeals to men of all ages and brings a wide variety of individuals into her shop, according to Sartirana.
“Barbers kind of faded it out for a little bit,” Sartirana said. “A long time ago they were pretty popular and then the fade kind of went away but it’s coming back and I do a lot of the old school and new school,” Sartirana said. “In general, hairdressers don’t typically learn as many techniques with barbering as a barber would, but I can do really anything from long hair to short hair. I’ve kind of crafted and perfected my skill with haircutting.”
Like all business owners across the country, Sartirana takes special care following COVID-19 safety protocols in her shop including the use of masks and hand sanitizer for herself and her clients. As she is currently working with one client at a time, social distancing is straightforward and efficient for the barbershop.
As for the future, Sartirana hopes to soon hire another experienced barber to add to her team in a booth rental position.
“I love the center of New Hartford, I love the people that are around this area,” Sartirana said. “I think personally that I’m going to do very, very well there from what I’ve seen from the people that have been coming in and from what people have been saying and the support that I’ve been getting. I’ve never, never had that kind of support ever so it’s nice.”
New Hartford Barber Company will be holding a ribbon-cutting event on Monday, Nov. 16 at 4:30 p.m.
