BARKHAMSTED — Since October, 10 year-old Riley Robinson has been donating thousands of eggs to the Open Door Soup kitchen in Winsted from chickens that she has raised.
Riley’s parents are Nicole Beauchene and Michael Robinson.
She has been raising chickens since she was seven years-old and recently won the Super Grand Champion award at the state’s Society of Poultry Breeders show.
Riley currently has 62 chickens and she said that, by donating the eggs, she’s trying to help people out in tough times.
“People needed help, which is why I volunteered,” Riley said. “Since Covid started, people have been really hit hard. It makes me feel good to help people out.”
According to both her and her grandmother Maryann Beauchene, Riley has donated 300 dozen eggs (3,600) to the Open Door Soup Kitchen, with her latest donation set to be for Thursday, June 24.
“She doesn’t just hand over the eggs, she has to collect and clean each one of them, then she has to package them,” Beauchene said. “It’s a very time consuming process.”
However, when asked about the process, Riley was very modest.
“I couldn’t do it all without the chickens,” she said.
Beauchene will be starting a 4H group in the area in the fall and for more information about the group email email@example.com
