WINSTED — A memorial bench in front of the town’s Senior Center was dedicated to the late Blanche McCarthy Sewell on Tuesday, June 22.
Sewell, a long-time member of the Winsted Lions Club was the first director of the Senior Center when it originally opened in 1974 at St. Andrews Lodge on Wheeler Street.
The Senior Center remained at St. Andrews until 1983 when Sewell secured grants to purchase and renovate the old Garibaldi Hall located on the corner of Holabird Ave. and Chestnut Street.
The building was renamed the Blanche McCarthy Winsted Senior Center in honor of Sewell’s efforts to secure the purchase of the building and its renovation.
Sewell retired in 1998 but remained a very active member of the community.
She was also an active member of the local Girl Scouts organization and the Winchester Grange, along with the Lions Club.
Sewell died in May 2019 at 86 years old.
