WINSTED — Paws and Reflect, a shop that will offer handmade soy wax candles, wax melts, and soaps, will soon open at 538 Main Street.
The shop is owned by Torrington native Jasmine Samok, who originally started the business over a year ago.
“I originally was selling my products at farmers markets around the area, but I decided to finally put my roots down and open a store,” Samok said. “I decided to open in Winsted because I walked by this location and I couldn’t take my eyes off it. To me, this location is a good opportunity.”
The location was previously home to a barber and hair design shop.
Samok said that the name of the store comes from her support of animal welfare organizations.
“I donate a portion of my earnings to those charities, which is a way of me helping animals and the organizations that help them,” Samok said. “I’ve donated to Double Dog Rescue and many others in the area.”
She said that Paws and Reflect offers 41 scents year-round, along with scents that go along with each season.
“I do a lot of fresh scents like lemon grapefruit, black raspberry, along with bakery scents like an iced cinnamon bun, and french vanilla,” she said. “Sunset kiwi is one of my favorite scents, along with black raspberry vanilla. One of my favorite winter scents is called smoked birch, which is very woodsy and smokey.”
Samok said that she can also create custom scents for customers, as requested.
When The Winsted Phoenix was interviewing Samok, one of her customers was in the store raving about a custom-made “Mountain Dew soda” scent she made for him.
“My favorite thing about making candles is seeing the customer’s face when they get a product that they like,” she said.
