Community Announcements

Winsted Area Peace Action will conduct a candlelight vigil on Monday August 9, 2021 from 7:30PM-9:00PM in East End Park, Main Street, Winsted.  The purpose of the vigil is to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the atomic bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It is also to speak out against all violence, including gun violence, and in favor of all means of non-violent conflict resolution.

The bombings, which killed over 214,000 citizens and leveled 2 cities, were the first and only nuclear weapons used in a war.  Winsted Area Peace Action members vigil annually to bear witness to the victims of nuclear warfare and to remind the community that nuclear weapons continue to be a threat to the security of people everywhere.

The vigil will begin at 7:30PM along the Main Street end of the park.  At 8:30, participants will sing songs of peace joined by the young people from Camp Kinderland based in Tolland, MA.  The camp has been a co-sponsor of this vigil for many years.  All those who are concerned about violence in the world, and interested in promoting a vision of a nuclear free world as well as fostering peace in the world, are invited to join us. For further information please contact Barbara Braunstein 860 309-4803 or Ann Evans 860 379-7858.
