TORRINGTON — Tequanna’s Soul Food & Sweets opened on 21 Main Street on Saturday, Aug. 7.

The restaurant is serving very unique cuisine in the Northwest Corner with its menu of classic Soul food items including turkey wings, barbeque chicken, pork chops, ribs, baked chicken, along with collard greens, candy yams, and much more.

Restaurant owner Tequanna Tyson told The Winsted Phoenix that Soul food and cooking have been a passion of hers since she was a child growing up in Queens, New York.

“There isn’t any type of restaurant that sells soul food in the Northwest Corner,” Tyson said. “My grandmother taught me how to cook soul food. I started cooking for little festivals in New York five years ago. When I came here I saw an opportunity because this city really needed something different.”

Tyson describes Soul food as “Basically, it’s like cooking with soul from your home.”

“Soul food is, basically, like Thanksgiving every day,” she said. “Everything you have ever had for Thanksgiving, we will have here. Everybody loves barbecue chicken, but I’ve noticed that cornbread has become everyone’s favorite. It’s a new place in town, come try it out and I’m sure you will come back! We’re also going to have special events, including a back-to-school night, Halloween night, eventually, we will have everything.”

Tyson moved to Torrington last June and instantly fell in love with the city.

“It’s a nice and peaceful city,” Tyson said. “I love it, my kids love it and everyone loves it.”

Tequanna’s Soul Food & Sweets is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
