WINSTED — For more than a year, students at Northwestern Connecticut Community College (NCCC) had to deal with learning virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
A few weeks into the in-person fall semester, the college held a Welcome Fair at East End Park on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
The event includes information booths for various campus clubs and organizations, along with various games, including a bounce house.
“It feels good being back in-person,” NCCC Campus Advisor Robert Turner said. “I enjoy seeing students get around campus. I was itching to come back to campus because staying home and not being around the students, not being able to interact and talk to people and learn different things, was a bad thing. I think everyone feels great being back here and it gives some sense of normalcy.”
“I love being back on campus,” NCCC Deaf Club President Chris Hauschild said. “I’m able to understand much more when I am learning in person. It was hard to follow things on the computer and it’s good to be back.”
Everyone interviewed for this story shared Hauschild’s feelings about being back on campus for a new semester, including Psychology major Shaisck Cornejo.
“Going online and being online all the time and isolating yourself can have a lot of impact on your mental health,” Cornejo said. “It feels great to be back.”
Cornejo is a member of the college’s Students of Color Alliance, which was started in February.
“This group is about creating a space where we can learn about the current realities of racism barriers,” Cornejo said. “It’s also about learning about the accomplishments of people of color, especially in education.”
NCCC has always been strong with having multiple student interest groups, including the group the Northwestern Book Nerds.
“I’m a member because I love to read!” member Charlotte Benson said. “It’s nice to have escapism and share opinions with other people. I love being back with people and it’s just so nice to be back on campus.”
