Connecticut State Representative Raghib Allie-Brennan, a Democrat from Bethel, has been charged with shoplifting after allegedly failing to scan two items at a Target self-checkout on Monday evening.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Allie-Brennan explained that he was rushing to deliver items to his grandmother in the hospital, had no bags, and was juggling several purchases when the incident occurred.
Bethel police issued him a misdemeanor summons for sixth-degree larceny. According to a police summary, Target’s loss prevention staff recognized him from what they described as “previous unreported larcenies.” He was detained after security footage reportedly showed him trying to leave the store with $26.69 worth of unpaid merchandise.
The 33-year-old, who has served four terms since first being elected in 2018, did not respond to further inquiries beyond his public statement. His post did not address the allegation of prior thefts.
“While I do not have a record, I take full responsibility for the error and am working through the legal processes to resolve the matter quickly and respectfully,” Allie-Brennan wrote.
House Speaker Matt Ritter of Hartford confirmed he spoke with Allie-Brennan and acknowledged the lawmaker’s acceptance of responsibility. “He recognizes the high standard to which I hold our members and is taking responsibility for inadvertently leaving the Target self-checkout without scanning several items,” Ritter said.
