Thousands Lose Power Across Connecticut Amid Extreme Heat and Humidity

HARTFORD — Thousands of Connecticut residents were without electricity Tuesday evening as scorching heat and intense humidity pushed the state’s power grid to its limits.

According to officials, both Eversource and United Illuminating reported widespread outages during the ongoing heat wave.

United Illuminating reported that 3,002 customers were without power as of 8:46 p.m. Most of those — around 2,770 customers — were located in the East Haven and New Haven areas, with service expected to be restored by 9:15 p.m. Outages were also reported in West Haven, Orange, Milford, Shelton, Bridgeport, Hamden, Stratford, and Fairfield.

Eversource, the state’s largest electric utility, reported 1,044 customers without service around 8:30 p.m. Among the hardest-hit areas were Hartford with 335 outages, Greenwich with 74, and Bloomfield with 66.

The outages occurred as a record-breaking June heat wave gripped the state. The National Weather Service said heat index values approached 110 degrees in some regions.

Utilities are continuing repair efforts as residents cope with the extreme conditions.
