A Massachusetts man faces multiple charges after Connecticut state police say he pulled over on the highway to chug a beer—then sped off and was caught going 122 mph.
Carlos Gallegos-Loja, 23, of Brockton, was spotted around 1 a.m. Sunday on I-84 West in West Hartford after troopers saw his Chevrolet Traverse parked on the roadside with its occupants standing outside.
By the time police turned around to check on them, the vehicle had driven off. A short time later, another trooper clocked the same SUV speeding at 122 mph in a 65-mph zone and weaving across lanes.
When pulled over, Gallegos-Loja showed clear signs of impairment, including slow speech and movements, according to police. Troopers also found open alcohol containers inside the vehicle.
He allegedly admitted to stopping earlier to drink a beer before getting back on the highway.
Gallegos-Loja failed sobriety tests and was arrested. His charges include:
-
DUI
-
Reckless driving
-
Operating without insurance
-
Driving without a license
-
Drinking while driving
-
Improper parking
-
Failure to stay in lane
He was released on $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on July 15.
