Ashley Morin of Bristol died from a drug overdose while in custody at York Correctional Institution, just five days after her arrest on August 24, 2024, according to a 52-page report by the Office of Inspector General.
Morin had been arrested by Bristol police for violating a protective order. Unable to post her $10,000 bond, she was placed in the prison’s medical unit, where nurses treated her for alcohol withdrawal and a surgical wound from a recent cesarean section.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled her death as acute intoxication caused by a mix of multiple drugs. Investigators concluded it was an accidental overdose, noting that Morin showed no signs of self-harm or depression before her death.
Authorities believe the drugs were smuggled into the high-security Niantic facility, but how they got inside remains a mystery.
“The use of illicit drugs in the DOC is an obvious problem,” the inspector general wrote. “Addressing this problem poses significant investigative challenges. In the present case, no credible evidence was developed as to how or when Morin obtained the drugs that killed her.”
