Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest of Man on Connecticut Deadly Weapon Offender Registry

WILLIMANTIC, CT – A late-night traffic stop led to the arrest of Richard Martinez, a convicted felon listed on the Connecticut Deadly Weapon Offender Registry, police said Thursday.

Martinez was pulled over around 11:50 p.m. Wednesday for driving an unregistered vehicle and using misused license plates. When officers approached, he reportedly exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.

Police said Martinez resisted arrest after being caught and was found to have an active arrest warrant out of Norwich. He was also found in possession of a fully loaded Smith & Wesson .38 Special revolver with a defaced serial number.

Additional charges include:

  • Interfering with police

  • Possession of a revolver

  • Carrying a pistol without a permit

  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

  • Operating an unregistered motor vehicle

Martinez was held on $250,000 bond and arraigned Thursday in Danielson Superior Court.
