Alleged Multi-State Crime Spree Ends in Connecticut with Trooper Injured, Two Arrested

A man and woman from the Bronx were arrested Wednesday after a high-speed chase through Connecticut ended with a state trooper injured and multiple vehicles damaged.

State police said the suspects, 27-year-old Jonser Hernandez-Mota and 27-year-old Betsy Bermudez, were wanted for a series of crimes, including the assault and robbery of an off-duty NYPD officer. The duo was also linked to a strong-armed robbery in Greenwich earlier the same day.

Around 2:18 p.m., Connecticut troopers were alerted that a black 2020 BMW X3 tied to the New York case was heading into the state on I-95. Department of Transportation cameras later spotted the vehicle traveling the wrong way on the Exit 7 entrance ramp in Stamford, before entering Canal Street.

Troopers located the BMW, but the driver refused to stop, sparking a pursuit. During the chase, the suspects’ vehicle struck a state police cruiser and several other vehicles, resulting in non-life-threatening injuries to one trooper.

The chase continued to the Route 15 North Exit 34 ramp, where the car crashed into nearby woods off Wire Mill Road. Both suspects fled on foot but were quickly apprehended.

Hernandez-Mota faces more than a dozen charges, including interfering with an officer, reckless endangerment, driving the wrong way, and leading police on a pursuit. Authorities say he had no valid license and was wanted on multiple warrants across five states, some of which were fully extraditable. He was held on a $150,000 bond and is due in Stamford Superior Court on June 26.

Bermudez was charged with interfering with an officer and reckless use of a limited access highway as a pedestrian. She was released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 16.

The NYPD, Greenwich and Stamford Police, Westchester County authorities, and the FBI assisted in the case.
