Charges Dropped Against Cromwell Teen Wrongfully Accused of Speeding at 132 MPH

A judge dismissed charges Friday against 19-year-old Azmir Djurkovic of Cromwell, who was wrongly accused of driving 132 mph on Interstate 91, according to Connecticut State Police.

Colonel Daniel Loughman admitted to errors in the investigation and issued a public apology to Djurkovic and his family.

Police initially arrested Djurkovic on June 4 after troopers spotted a white Mercedes speeding and weaving through traffic. Troopers stopped their pursuit due to safety concerns, later claiming the vehicle exited the highway toward Cromwell.

However, a review revealed mistakes in the investigation. “We recognize the distress this incident has caused Mr. Djurkovic and his family. We offer a sincere apology to him and those directly impacted,” the statement read.

An internal investigation is now underway to examine what went wrong, whether protocols were followed, and if disciplinary action is needed.

Djurkovic, through his lawyers, said he had cruise control set at 65 mph that morning. His legal team provided images showing his car’s wheels, roof, and door handles didn’t match those in police dash cam footage. They also noted the vehicle in the video was a different model or year.

State police have not released further details about why the charges were dropped.
